Overview

NENU is presently composed of 19 schools , 56 specially fields of study for undergraduates, and a graduate school, which offers M.A. degree in 145 subjects/specialties, and Ph.D. degree in 77 subjects/ specialties. There are 9 first-grade specialties authorized to confer Ph.D. Degrees, which are History, Biology, and Geography, Marxist Theory, Education, Chinese Literature, Mathematics, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Engineering. NENU has 11 disciplines with Post-doctoral R&D Stations, including Education, Chinese Literature, History, Applied Economics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology , Geography, Political Science, Marxist Theory, Environmental Science and Engineering. It also has three professional M.A. degrees in Education, Public Administration, and Physical Education. 5 subjects have been listed as key disciplines of the National Institution of Higher Learning, including Education Principles, World History, Cell Biology,Ecology as well as Ideological and Political Education . Six are among the construction projects of the key disciplines of the national "Tenth Five-Year Plan" and the "211 Project". History, Chinese and Biology are considered as personnel training and scientific research bases of the national fundamental disciplines of arts and sciences. Institute of Basic Education Research in Rural Areas and Center for History of World Civilization are defined as the key research bases for Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education.
Thanks to the construction and development for more than half a century, the University has established a system of specialities which is complete and sturdy, and has formed her framework for education in the new century.

Undergraduate Education

Undergraduate education is the fundamental principle of the school. NENU has been carrying on teaching reform and optimizing talents training process. On the basis of the "excellent teachers project"("the project of training excellent middle school teachers in the 21st century") started in 1997, in 2003, NENU drew the curtain of reform project of undergraduate teaching and education in the new century and proposed her training purpose of guiding students to become independent learners with knowledge, ability, and responsibility, high school teachers with sounded knowledge, initiative spirit and ability of practice, or other senior talents. The university initiated the talents training pattern of "having good fundamental and specialized knowledge and various forms for employments", constructed a complete curriculum system, carried out the management pattern of credit system, and established and improved the teaching service and support system……     

Graduate Education

We started the graduate education in 1953 as one of the earliest in our country. Since the renewed system of graduate enrolment in 1978, we have achieved a lot of progress. Up to now, the number of graduates and students of graduate classes has been more than 5,300. More than 500 students have got doctor degrees. There are more than 2,700 existing graduates in our school now.

In recent years, the development of graduate education has come into a new stage of fast development. Now there are 145 M.A. degree specialties, and 77 Ph.D. degree specialties. There are 9 faculties authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 11disciplines with Post-doctoral R&D Stations, 5key disciplines of The National Institution of Higher Education, 6 disciplines among the construction projects of the key disciplines of the national "Tenth Five-Year Plan" and the "211 Project" and 18 disciplines among the key subject program of Jilin Province. Three disciplines are personnel training and scientific research bases of the national fundamental disciplines of arts and sciences……            

Continuing education in NENU has a long history. In May of 1953, Cheng Fangwu, NENU¡¯s former president and a well-known educationist established China¡¯s earliest correspondence education among high normal schools, which opened a new chapter for further education of primary and secondary school teachers.

On August, 22nd of 2000, the NENU College of Further Education was established. It is made up of the Center for Education and Management Training of Northeast Cadres under the direction of Ministry of Education, the Center for Training of Northeast College Teaching Staff under the direction of Ministry of Education, the NENU Center for Continuing Education of Elementary and Secondary School Teachers, the College of Adult Education and the Periodical Office of Training of Primary & Secondary School Teachers.
