In order to further promote the foreign translation of Chinese classics and advance the international communication of excellent traditional Chinese culture, the 2022 National High-end Forum on Classic Translation, hosted by the English Translation Professional Committee of China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese (CACSEC) and organized by the School of Foreign Languagesof our NENU, was successfully held in Changchun on December 17th.
The theme of this year’s high-end forum is “China’s Translation Integrates Both Home and Abroad”. This high-end forum invited eight experts and scholars from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Hebei Normal University, Soochow University, Nankai University, Shenzhen University, Xi’an International Studies University, Northeast Normal University to give speeches. Eight experts from Shanghai International Studies University, Hunan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Northeast Normal University, Central China Normal University, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences were invited as guests. More than 400 experts and scholars from all over the country gathered online.
Professor Wang Yan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of NENU, Professor Li Zhengshuan, President of the English Translation Professional Committee of CACSEC, and Professor Zhou Guijun, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages of NENU, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Shang Yingmei, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Foreign Languages.
This high-end forum saw in-depth discussions on topics such as the translation and communication of Chinese classics and research works on Chinese cultural classics in the form of keynote reports, and experts shared the latest research results. Keynote reports include case studies, theoretical studies, and future studies.
Professor Wang Kefei of Beijing Foreign Studies University discussed several issues in the translation of current classics from four aspects: the purpose of translation, the method of translation, the strategy of translation and the ability of translation, and pointed out the direction for future research. The topic of Professor Li Zhengshuo’s speech was “Research on the Behavior of Translators of Yuefu Poems in China”. He pointed out that the value of literary translation does not only depend on the re-creation of the translator, but also is influenced by the reader’s interpretation and the translator’s reinterpretation, and the translation of Yuefu poems, which is a classic of ancient Chinese culture, contains great research value.
Zhao Changjiang, Vice President and Secretary-General of the English Translation Professional Committee of CACSEC, made a summary for the conference. This forum provides directional guidance for the healthy and rapid development of research and practice in the translation and communication of Chinese classics in the new era, improves the level of academic research, and improves the ability of translation and communication, which is of great significance for deepening mutual learning among civilizations and promoting Chinese culture to better reach the world.
