“Donating hematopoietic stem cells, for me, is no big deal, though I’ve never met her (the recipient) before, I hope she will recover very soon.” said Zhang Changwei, a freshman from the School of Literature, NENU. On January 6th, he was hospitalized for donating hematopoietic stem cells for a female leukemia patient. Zhang Changwei was NENU’s second hematopoietic stem cell donor with no genetic connection to the recipient.
Zhang Changwei comes from a peasant family in Anshun city, Guizhou province. In 2010, he volunteered to join “China hematopoietic stem cell donor database”. In October, 2013, after the initial comparison and high-resolution detection, it was found that his bone marrow cells matched exactly with that of a 27-year-old female leukemia patient. After that, he conducted a second high-resolution match and physical examination. The results were qualified, so Zhang asked for leave from school and accepted peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell collection on January 6th.
On that day, Wen Zhiyu, party secretary of the Red Cross, Jilin province, visited Zhang Changwei in the hospital and awarded him certificate of honor as well as solatium. Wen Zhiyu spoke highly of Zhang’s noble spirits of selfless dedication. Recently, several provincial and municipal news media covered the story of Zhang Changwei.
