Recently, NENU's project "final design for the current energy engineering prototype with horizontal axis and automatic pitch axis" got funded by 2013 National Oceanic Special Funds. The project, jointly declared by Hangzhou Jianghe Hydropower Technology Co., LTD. will run from 2013 to 2016 with a total funding of 24 million RMB with among which 19 million was distributed by the nation and the expenditure amount for NENU is 7.6 million RMB. Professor Zhang Xueming from the School of Physics, NENU, is in charge of its technological development. The project aims to develop the national engineering prototype of ocean current energy. It is based on the "863" project and the national science and technology support project undertaken and accomplished by NENU.
Currently only three national universities have obtained the project of relevant engineering prototype. They are NENU, Harbin Engineering University and Zhejiang University. The approval of the project proves that NENU has taken the lead in the development of ocean current power.
