Co-sponsored by Northeast Asia Regional Research Center of the University of Shimane, National Institute for the Humanities (NIHU), School of History and Culture of NENU and Research Center of East Asia Civilization (East Asia Research Institute), the International Symposium on 'Process and Background of Modernization in Northeast Asian Countries' was held from September 19th to 20th in our university.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Liu Xiaodong, Dean of the School of History and Culture. Han Dongyu, vice President of NENU, Professor Atsushi Inoue of the University of Shimane made speeches respectively. Han Dongyu welcomed the scholars who participated in the event and pointed out that the seminar, under the theme of 'Process and Background of Modernization in Northeast Asian Countries', was of great significance. He hoped all parties should continue their efforts to strengthen connections, face the reality, look for solutions through in-depth and meticulous research and break the deadlock of regional issues of today. Atsushi Inoue hoped that today's East Asian scholars should keep abreast with the new era, deepen exchanges, learn from each other, promote friendship, overcome difficulties and contribute to the academic research in Northeast Asia.
Revolving around the three main topics, 'Cognition: others' awareness of Asia', 'Ruling ideology' and 'Exchange: People and Objects', more than 20 scholars from universities and research institutes at home and abroad such as University of Tokyo, Northeastern University, Hokkaido University, Yamagata University, International Japan Culture Research Center, National Institute for the Humanities (NIHU),Seoul University, Central Research Institute of Taiwan, Inner Mongolia University and Northeast Normal University extended discussions during the conference. Among them, many scholars such as Makoto Kurozumi, an emeritus professor from the University of Tokyo, Professor Han Dongyu, associate Professor Zhuang Sheng and Ms Tang Yanfeng from NENU made keynote speeches. Finally, some of the participants extended comprehensive discussions and reached consensus on many issues. After the conference, some scholars went to Harbin and held academic discussions with scholars from the Harbin Normal University in relation to the 'History and Culture of China's Northeast Frontiers'.
