On December 3rd, the School of Foreign Languages of NENU organized and convened the “High-end Forum on Translation Talents Training and ProgramConstruction”. Professor Han Dongyu, Vice President of NENU, Professor Wu Zhihui, Head of the Graduate School, and those in charge of the Social ScienceDepartment attended the meeting. Zhou Guijun, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Han Dongyu gave welcome speeches to the participating experts, scholars and students. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Shang Yingmei, Party Secretary of the School of Foreign Languages. This high-end forum invited eight experts and scholars from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai University, Nankai University, University of International Business and Economics, Fudan University and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies to deliver speeches. The forum was held online, attracting over 700 participants at the peak time in Tencent Meeting and live broadcast platform.
In the morning session, Professor Wei Zhang of Beijing Foreign Studies University took Chinese-English Translation Course as an example and pointed out the idea and practice of compiling ideological and political textbooks for translation majors with “two-track integration” and “internal and external consideration”. Professor Zhang Ailing of Shanghai International Studies University elaborated on the education of translation degree from the perspective of Industry-University-Research’s integration, analyzed the connotative development of translation degree education under the background of subject classification, and combined with the talent training mode of Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation of SISU, shared her deep thoughts on promoting the adjustment of subject catalogue, improving the instructor’s guidance ability, perfecting the talent training system and speeding up the training of national high-level talents. Professor Fu Jingmin of Shanghai University, discussed the issues related to the development of professional education from the perspective of scholars, put forward the principles of translation major construction, emphasized the importance of translation awareness around the theme of the cultivation of translation ability, and put forward some suggestions for the construction of translation major in the new era. Professor Wang Chuanying of Nankai University believed that the key points of training well-rounded language talents include increasing the number of languages, improving the structure of foreign language talents, and training well-rounded talents of “foreign language plus major”. Colleges and universities should actively innovate the talent training mode according to their own disciplinary advantages to improve the quality of translation talentstraining.
In the afternoon session, Professor Xiang Mingyou of the University of International Business and Economics discussed the construction of translation discipline and the cultivation of translation talents in the new era. Professor Tao Youlan of Fudan University, drawing on the training experience of Doctor of Translation Studies at Fudan University, pointed out that Doctor of Translation Studies should cultivate the awareness of problems, methodology and innovation, and improve the ability of practice and summary, critical thinking and communication. Professor Zhao Junfeng of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies deeply explained the concept and principle of doctor’s degree education in translation by combining the adjustment of translation degree and DTI demonstration process, training objectives, curriculum, teacher requirements and cooperative training mode. Huang Youyi, executive vice president of Translators Association of China and vice president of China Academy of Translation, believed that the international environment needs more appropriate international communication awareness and communication ability, and cultivating intercultural communication ability is the basic requirement for international communication. Director Huang Youyi put forward the necessity of training professional doctors in translation education from the reality of translation education and the voice of employers.
This forum is a positive response to how to seize the strategic opportunity period of international communication and cultivate high-level translation leaders who can serve the country’s international communication needs under the background of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. It is of great significance to explore the training of the professional translation talents and major construction of the integration of undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees, and to promote the high-quality and efficient development of disciplines in the School of Foreign Languages.
