The 6th Model United Nations Environment Conference Was Jointly Organized by the School of Environment and the International School of Chinese Studies

Published:April 19, 2023 Review:

In order to broaden students’ international horizons and enhance their ability to participate in global environmental governance, the 6th Model United Nations Environment Conference was held by the School of Environment of NENU in conjunction with the International School of Chinese Studies from April 14th to 15th. Gao Wencai, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Environment, and relevant teachers from International School of Chinese Studies and the School of Environment were invited to participate in the activities.

In his speech, Gao Wencai hoped that the students would improve their professional quality, deepen their understanding of global issues, exercise their teamwork ability, strengthen their sense of social responsibility and mission, and shoulder the important responsibility of building a beautiful China and realizing Community of Shared Future for Mankind.

The theme of this conference is “focusing on plastic pollution” and the working languages are both Chinese and English. The participating students represent different countries to negotiate around the theme, looking for a solution that all parties can reach while safeguarding their own interests. On April 14th, in the first round of consultation, delegations first clarified their positions, showed their determination to reduce plastic pollution, put forward specific measures to control plastic pollution, and invited professionals to share and exchange views on global plastic pollution in the round-table forum. On April 15th, the second round of formal debate began. Representatives of various countries had a heated debate on the export of plastic waste and treatment measures, and discussed in detail the technical assistance and economic assistance for global plastic pollution problems, and formulated and signed relevant agreements. The relevant person in charge of the School of Environment commented on this activity. After the selection, a total of 9 students won the awards of the conference. Among them, the EU team won the Best Team Award; Ba Yuhan, the EU’s representative, won the Best Representative Award. Qin Yaling, the China’srepresentative won the Outstanding Representative Award. Han Endian, the Philippines’s representative of the EU won the Best Position Award. Wu Geqianhui, the India’s representative won the Best Style Award.

It is the first time that the School of Environment has jointly organized a Model United Nations Environment Conference with its brother departments. In terms of forming the delegation, it is the first time to invite foreign students to participate in it, and to build an international exchange platform for students with cross-cultural backgrounds, which has improved students’ awareness of global cooperation and open attitude, and contributed to the construction of an international demonstration school of the School of Environment. With reference to the agenda of the United Nations Environment Assembly, this Model United Nations Environment Conference added a round-table forum for the first time, and the duration was adjusted from half a day to one day, so that students could fully debate and improve their negotiation ability on environmental issues in an all-round way through immersive negotiation experience.
